October 6th Grade Updates

ELA
We're participating in the Book It Program from October through March. The more students read, the more pizza they earn. Check out the official Book It Parent/Guardian Letter for details.
Science
Students are diving into states of matter and physical vs. chemical changes. We've investigated s'mores (delicious research!) and done the classic baking soda and vinegar demonstration. The focus is on making observations, recording evidence, and explaining what we've learned.
Math
We're wrapping up multiplying and dividing fractions, then moving into ratios and rates. That includes greatest common factor, least common multiple, equivalent fractions, scaling, and ratio tables.
In Honors, we're continuing algebra with single-step equations, then moving to inequalities and function tables to finish the unit.
Social Studies
We just finished learning about geographical tools, including a guest speaker who's a cartographer for the Erie County Engineer's Office. She explained modern mapmaking and what she does with Geographic Information Systems. Our 6th graders were great listeners!
Next up: reviewing longitude and latitude.
